PRINCIPAL’S PEN

This week is National Lutheran Schools Week, a week set aside to celebrate the blessings of Lutheran schools. Did you know that St. John is a part of the largest religious school system after the Catholic system? Did you know that the Lutheran Church – Missouri Synod operates 2,343 Lutheran schools worldwide? Did you know that there are over 229,000 students that attend these schools? These statistics tell how big our school system is, but that’s not the real story.

St. John is celebrating this week with many special events. See the article later in the Banner for all the details. It’s fun to celebrate with special activities. The kids love to dress up and have fun. Celebrating together, enjoying friendships, and making special memories are all a great part of National Lutheran Schools Week, but they’re not the real story.

St. John, and other Lutheran schools, is special because we connect children to Jesus. We are not just a normal school with a religion class thrown in. Helping children get to know Jesus and grow in faith happens in every class throughout the day. It happens as teachers pray with their classes. It happens as teachers help children understand God’s plan for their lives. It happens in discipline as we lead children in asking for and giving forgiveness. It happens as we worship together in POWER Up time and chapel services. It happens as teachers take time to get to know children and their families and minister to them outside of the classroom. It happens as relationships are formed that last beyond the school year. It happens as teachers pray for students and their families. It happens when, even though we are not perfect, we strive to model Jesus in our words and actions.

These are the reasons that St. John is different. These are the reasons we celebrate St. John this week. Thank you for being a part of the St. John family. We give glory to God for all the blessings given through St. John Lutheran School!

Seeking to reach all with Christ, St. John Lutheran School partners with families to provide a Christ-centered education which nurtures faith in Christ,

promotes discipleship, develops God-given abilities and skills,

and encourages academic excellence.

We always appreciate you passing on to us the names of families who might be interested in our school. We can then personally invite them to see what we have to offer! The more the merrier, so spread the word!

McTeacher Night

Celebrate Lutheran Schools Week with your St. John family at McDonalds tonight, Monday, Jan. 28, from 4:00-7:00. Don’t miss out on the fun with friends, families, and teachers. Besides the fun, this night also helps to raise fun for the 7th/8th grade class trip to Washington, D.C. in spring 2014.

Science Central is Coming!

Science Central will be here this Friday, Feb. 1! They will be leading our K-6 students in all kinds of great activities in their 3...2...1...Blast Off science program. The Kindergarten through 2nd grade students will participate from 9:00-10:00 and the 3rd through 6th grade students from 10:15-11:15. Parent volunteers are still needed to help at the stations. Call the office to let us know that want to have fun and learn with your kids!

TinCaps Reading Program

Information on the TinCaps Reading Program is coming home today! Students in K-8 can earn a free ticket to a TinCaps game and parents can get discounted tickets. It’s a great way to encourage your child to read. Classes that participate in Book-it can apply their reading to both of these programs. Watch for all the details today or contact your child’s teacher.

Science Fair Approaching!

It’s time to think about starting a Science Fair project! The teachers have the information packets or you can get them in the office. This is a great opportunity for your child to explore an area of interest and learn new things! If you have questions see Mr. Schroeder. Our Science Fair will be Friday, February 15. This is a date change from our published calendar to align more closely with the next levels of the science fair. Projects will be due no later than 8:00 a.m. the previous day, Thursday, February 14. Plan now to join us that evening to see all the projects and recognize the hard work of our students.

If you need a display board you can get one from the office. The boards are 32” high and 36” wide and are available first come-first served. You can make your check out to “St. John PTL”. Each board sells for $5.50.

St. John Showcase 2013!!

We are gearing up for St. John Showcase 2013!!! Slated for Friday evening, March 8th, the Showcase is a great opportunity for students to do just that – showcase their God-given talents and abilities!

St. John Showcase 2013 provides an opportunity for students to share their God-given gifts and abilities in areas such as art, music, dance, drama, etc. Last year’s event was a very positive experience for many of our students, and we are hoping to make this year’s event even better. Please contact Mrs. Meyer now if you are willing to help. A flyer with more information is coming home today.

Spring Auction

It’s time to mark your calendars and plan to attend the St. John Spring Auction on Saturday, April 27. Please also be thinking of whom you would like to ask to attend. This fun evening includes an excellent dinner, awesome silent auction items, and a lively live auction.

Many people are required to make this event a success. Our auction committee from the past two years is in need of more help. If you are looking for a way to get involved and would like to be a part of this great team, contact the school office.

UPLIFT 2013

Last year we kicked off our first ever annual fund. The UPLIFT campaign was a tremendous success, raising over $50,000 in donations from school families, church families, alumni, parents of alumni, and community members. These gifts were matched 1 to 1 by the Dekko Foundation, thus increasing our efforts to $100,000. These funds have been used for technology, curriculum needs, tuition assistance, and general operating expenses. We are getting ready to kick off this year’s campaign. Please pray for this effort as it is a major blessing for the children and our school. Watch in the weeks ahead for other important ways that you can contribute to the success of this campaign.

School Skating Party

Help celebrate the end of the 2nd Trimester at our school skating party on SATURDAY, FEBRUARY 23, from 4:30 – 6:30 at the Skatin’ Station in Auburn. Mark your calendars now so you don’t miss the fun!

Lutheran Schools Share Christ…

On their bumpers!!!

We have a good supply of bumper stickers advertising our school and would like to distribute them to interested parents. If you would like to show your support of our school in this way, please contact Mrs. Thiem for your free sticker!

Paper Towels!!

We have depleted our supply of paper towels donated by families to start the year. If you forgot to send yours at that time, or would just be willing to donate additional rolls, please send those to school. Your help is appreciated!!

Chapel Offerings

Our chapel offerings this trimester are supporting Life and Family Services. This Kendallville agency helps support young mothers and their children. Students can support Life and Family Services by bringing in offerings to chapel or by bringing in diapers, clothing, formula, and baby food. If we raise $600 by the end of the trimester Mr. Walz will dye his hair blue! We have a little more than $100 to go! So, bring in your offering or other gift and support Life and Family Services and see Mr. Walz go blue!

Welcome to God’s Family!

Last Friday was a special day at St. John. Haylee Terry, Jared DiGirolamo, and Jaden DiGirolamo were all baptized at the end of the school day. Jaxson Campbell was baptized in the evening. Baptism is a special event in which God forgives sins and welcome a person into His family. We are thankful to God for the blessing of baptism for these children and welcome them as members of God’s family!

Thank You, Lord, for Your Servant, Paul

Thank you, Lord, for sending us your servant we call “Paul”,

And for strengthening his spirit so that he could serve us all.

Thank you for his patience as he’s led us through the years,

Standing solidly beside us through our laughter and our tears.

Thank you, Lord, for giving him a pure and gentle heart;

Thank you for his peaceful calm he’s shown us from the start.

Thank you, Lord, for giving us moments to reflect

Upon the joy of living our lives without regret.

Thank you, Lord, for sending us your servant we call “Paul” –

For his wisdom and his courage as he answers your next call.

Bless him and his family as they journey through these days.

Give them joy and faith abounding through the vision of your ways.

Thank you, Lord, for sending us your servant we call “Paul” –

For allowing us to partner in our quest of reaching all.

Help us to remember ‘twill be now as was before

That in prayer we keep each other ‘til the day we meet once more.

- Words written by St. John member Jane Pankop and our church organist Judy Petersen and set to the tune of one of Pastor Griebel’s favorite Thanksgiving hymns. It was presented by the St. John Senior Choir on his last Sunday service yesterday.
